Corpus Christi in Granada

Day Trips

Corpus Christi in Granada

Corpus Christi is, probably, the most important feast in Granada. During a week, there ara all kind of celebrations and activities all around the town: puppet shows and activities for children, bullfighting, processions, balcony decorations, competitions, exhibitions, etc...

Events of the day
Corpus Christi
There are, some flamenco and regional music performances in "casetas" (huge tents) in the fairground and in the city centre.

Two major processions take place in Granada during the feast. The first is the Tarasca (Tarasque), of pagan origin, which leads out on the Wednesday. In this procession, a figure of a woman on a dragon, accompanied by giants and other characters wearing big papier maché heads, walks through the streets of Granada.

The other procession, which is named after the feast of Corpus Christi itself, is solemn and religious and leads out on the Thursday.

During Corpus Christi in Granada, bullfights with horseback lancers are held. A week before this, Carocas (a traditional satirical competition) are placed around the Plaza Bib Rambla, near the Cathedral, for the people to read and comment on. They are also published in the local press.

Carocas are cartoons or caricatures which humorously highlight the major local and national events that have taken place during the year. They are accompanied by verses which are placed underneath in large panels.

This tradition dates back to the seventeenth century, and since the nineteenth century Carocas have been placed in the Plaza Bib Rambla. From hundreds of cartoons the top twenty are selected.

Corpus Christi in Granada is usually held in June, but feast days are variable and depend on the timing of Easter. You can find the exact date on which the Thursday of Corpus Christi falls by counting 60 days from Easter Monday.

Traditionally, the Thursday of Corpus Christi is a bank holiday in Granada and shops are not open. Friday is also a school holiday and students start their celebrations with the Tarasca on Wednesday.
