Pinnawalla Elephant Orphanage

It is the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. In 2011, there were 88 elephants, including 37 males and 51 females from 3 generations, living in Pinnawala.

The orphanage was originally founded in order to afford care and protection to many of the orphaned unweaned wild elephants found wandering in and near the forests of Sri Lanka. It was established in 1975 by theSri Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation.

It is possible to ride the elephants, and to feed them up for a little extra ammount of rupees.
You will can cross a river riding an elephant only paying 750LKR (4.5€)
To feed them up is necessary to pay 150LKR more(0.90€)
The entry costs 1500LKR (9€) and its open from 0.9.00 till 18.00
This small village has different kinds of accomodation, from 5stars hotel to appartments.
